Message from the Reeve
On behalf of the MD of Spirit River Council, I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to all those who chose to put their name forward in the last election to represent our community. It is never an easy thing to do, and we thank you for taking that step.
To everyone who voted – thank you. Your participation helped ensure a strong and healthy turnout of eligible voters.
Now, with the election behind us, many projects and challenges will present themselves; roads, potable water, daycare, housing, and economic development are all things that are required to continue to build a vibrant future – not only for our municipality, but for the surrounding region.
The Central Peace Regional Water Project continues to progress with reservoirs and a new treatment plant destined to provide water security to the entire region. Many years of drought have demonstrated just how critical this project will be to our future. With that, council will explore all available options to provide better access to water for our residents.
On the daycare front, our council heard loud and clear that it must be a priority. Individuals from every facet of our community – healthcare workers, teachers, farmers, oil field workers, and new businesses – all see this as a vital service to not only grow, but to maintain our community. To that end, council recently met at the legislature with the Minister of Municipal Affairs, as well as the Minister of Education and Childcare, to advocate for the childcare spaces the region desperately needs.
With increased economic activity, a growing workforce, and new young families, comes a need for housing of every sort; in that regard, the MD will continue to explore various opportunities to meet those needs.
Indeed, over the last number of years, the necessary pieces have been put in place to act upon providing childcare, housing, and fostering economic development. The next four years will be busy, but the future is bright not only for ourselves but also for our neighbours.
May you all have a wonderful holiday season and a very Merry Christmas.
Tony van Rootselaar,
Reeve
